East of Eden
In John Steinbeck’s East of Eden, the Hamilton family is hired to drill water wells by the newly arrived Trask family in Salinas, California. Adam Trask’s ambition is to turn this fertile valley he just purchased into an oasis where he can start his life anew and create a new existence.
While drilling the first well on Trask’s land, the Hamilton’s record the strata and recall a similar well: “Once, fifty miles down the valley, my father bored a well. The drill came up first with topsoil and then gravel and then with white sea sand. Full of shells and even pieces of whale bone.”
The layers of earth, once teeming with life from a bygone era, reveal the land’s worth. Water wells can transform the land into one’s own Eden.
